So you want to talk about race - Ijeoma Oluo (Book Review)
🍁 "We are all part of a racialized society, and it affects everythinh we bring to our interaction."
🍁 "The truth is , you don't even have to 'be racist' to be a part of the racist system."
.
.
🍁 This book is deeply focused on racism and racial oppression in America, but not only in America it has been spread in every corner of the world for a long time back. This is a grueling and heart wrenching book, conveying the pain of a black woman that she felt in this racially oppressive system. This book deals with most of the topics which a dark person often asks and faces in their day to day's work. Oluo also talks about dealing processes with this cancerous problem. I have jotted down some points from the book to discuss this book.

🍁 There are 17 thought provoking chapters in the book which talks about-
🔹 Is it really about race?
🔹What is racism?
🔹What if someone talks about race wrong?
🔹Privilage
🔹 Intersectionality and its importance
🔹Is police brutality really about race? You have recently seen George Floyd's case.
🔹 Affirmative action
🔹School to prison pipeline - How racial abuse starts from school and teachers itself.
🔹"'N' word"
🔹 Cultural appropriation - adoption or exploitation of another culture by a more dominant culture. 'Rap music was born from the rhythmic storytelling tradition of West Africa. But at present it makes it harder for rap by black artists to be accepted by mainstream culture when the same white rappers get much recognition.
🔹 Touching anyone without their permission is not okay.
🔹Microaggresion - which are small daily insults and indignities. Studies have shown that people subjected to higher levels of markers are more likely to exhibit the mental and physical symptoms of depression and it also causes a person of color to feel isolated and invalidated.
🔹What makes students angry? 🔹Model minority myth - it talks deeply about the racial oppression of Asian Americans.
🔹What to remember when a white person is concerned with fighting racial oppression and wants to stay focused on being a true ally in the battle against racism?
🔹What to do when you get called racist?
🔹What are other ways apart from using your voice? - from supporting POC-owned business to vote for diverse government representatives. This chapter talks about some ways to spread it.

🍁 I didn't discuss some chapters because it would be better if you would read those chapters. No matter if you are black or white, American or African, racially oppressive or racially dominative, you should read this book. Racism is along with us. This book is not only about America. In India, you can observe racial oppression in every part of the country. This is a must read book for everyone.
